Hydra: A Sailors Delight in Greece
April 25, 2012
Hydra is one of the Saronic Islands in Greece you should visit when sailing somewhere near the Aegean Sea. There is one main town with a crescent-shaped harbour, with restaurants, shops, galleries and markets. Garbage trucks are the only motor vehicles on the island. Donkey, bicycles and water taxis provide public transportation.
It can get busy, when high speed hydrofoils and catamarans from Piraeus (37 miles away) arrive with a tourist crowd. But they soon leave again and from late afternoon, its beautifully quiet.
There is only little space for boats in the harbour. An amazing place to spend the night. So get there early. It is definitely worth! And do not be surprised if other boats lie alongside.
i was there in september 2010, it was not possible to find appropriate mooring place, so we anchored in Mandraki, bay just around the corner. From there water taxis drive to town all day long… Hydra town is really amazing….
Very nice place where we’ll get to nextly…sure we’lldo it!
Sailed in and was horrified at what I saw. Yachts were rafter three deep from all quays, there was just enough room to turn around and leave. One mile down the coast we were anchored in a lovely bay on our own. Lovely.
Hydra is said to be great but too many people for me.
