Azores – Where Sailors Meet from All Over the World

Pico Azores

The Azores in Portugal are well known to those sailors crossing the North Atlantic Ocean from Europe to America or the other way round. They probably know the Marina of Horta on the Island Fayal (Faial) and might have carved some paintings on the famouse marina walls with notes about their crew or their vessels. It’s said to bring good luck and the wall has become a fancy attraction.

Horta has been a resting spot for sailors for quite some time and has a long history. The Marina today has space for 300 vessels and is very popular. To many sailors a dream has come true to stop in Horta.

This island Fayal is quite a phenomena: 50 years ago a tremendous volcanic eruption enlarged the island by more than 2 Km²! Some of the landscape looks quite bizarre.

One of the most popular bars between Europe and America is «Peters Café Sport». People from all over the world meet and share sailing experiences while nipping on –  what is said – the best Gin between Jamaica and Gibraltar. Next to the bar on the first floor is the «Scrimshaw Museum» with an interesting collection of handiwork from whalers.

The Weather : they say  «if you do not like the weather – just wait for 10 Minutes»

  • Maritime climate with mild temperatures from 16°C in winter to 26°C in summer (60° – 79°F)
  • The sea is warmed by the Golf Stream
  • Rainfall is around the year, more often in winter
  • Expect any weather condition any day: from sunshine to rainfall, from very windy to calm conditions.
