Mobile Applications for Sailors
Mobile Applications have become very popular. Next to «Native Applications» like the ones listed in the iTunes Store, «Mobile-Web-Application», based on HTML have become quite popular. Both technologies have in comment, that they bring applications from the desktop to your pocket and use smart phone features like GPS or sensor.
Also for sailors, mobile applications will definitely play a great role in the future. Already now, there are plenty of sailor related applications to download – many of them however not much more then a gadget.
With the Anchor Alarm one can set the anchor latitude, longitude and the distance. Once the boat has reached the given distance the alarm goes off. More then a gadget?

I’m not sure tbh, I’ve only ever had an Android sorry.
For iOS this is the ones I bought/saved after sailing for 4 years away from home:
iGrib (not the latest updates sadly)
Navionics (great value charts!)
WindfinderPro (most reliable, and with reports)
Hurrican Tracker
PredictWind
Apples new maps iOS6 (so you never find any interesting on land and continue sailing…)
Send me a message if you have more KILLER apps for iOS – sailing long distance (no racing etc)
Man hittar dig lite överallt!
Isailor
Passage Weather
Sailinglog
iDrifter
TidesPlaner
BoatBeacon
Daylight
I have a Samsung galaxy android, I use it as my chart-plotter now having had to change from my old Garmin unit due to charts not being available anymore. I am running the Navionics Ap for this and it suits me. It would not suit someone who relied on chartplotters for navigation, something I have never done always having a paper chart for passage making and planning. My old Garmin interfaces still so I plot old fashioned style on paper. But i like to have a visual and the navionics does it for me, saves me buying charts for every harbour as it is quite accurate enough for these. £47 has given me all the charts needed for close work. I am med based. I have made a usb charge point on the binacle so I can power the android while under way and keep it strapped on in a water prof case.
